摘要: A nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC) possesses space-dependent second-order nonlinear coefficients, which can effectively control nonlinear optical interactions through quasi-phase matching (QPM). LiNbO3 crystal is one of the most popular materials to fabricate NPC structures because of its excellent nonlinear optical properties. One- and two-dimensional LiNbO3 NPCs have been widely utilized in laser frequency conversion, spatial light modulation, and nonlinear optical imaging. However, limited by traditional poling methods, the experimental realization of three-dimensional (3D) NPC remains one of the greatest challenges in the field of nonlinear optics. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of a 3D LiNbO3 NPC by using a femtosecond laser to selectively erase the nonlinear coefficients in a LiNbO3 crystal. The effective conversion efficiency is comparable to that of typical QPM processes. Such 3D LiNbO3 NPC provides a promising platform for future nonlinear optical studies based on its unique ability to control nonlinear interacting waves in 3D configuration.

张勇,南京大学教授,博导,首批优秀青年基金获得者,教育部新世纪人才。分别于2002年和2007年在南京大学获得学士学位和博士学位,2008年至2010年在美国Arkansas大学做博士后,2010年2月全职回到南京大学。主要研究微纳结构材料中的新型非线性和量子光学效应,及其在成像、传感、通讯中的应用,在Nature Photon., Phys. Rev. Lett.,Nano Lett.,Appl. Phys. Lett.等刊物发表论文50多篇。
